Neurofeedback: How to Rewire Your Brain

You might have heard of biofeedback, but have you also heard of neurofeedback? Neurofeedback works on a similar principle as biofeedback, in that you can learn to listen to your body and understand its signals with the goal of changing your behavior and the way you feel. Neurofeedback is all about promoting self-mastery and can be used for a number of clinical conditions from mood disorders like anxiety and depression to sleep disorders, attention deficit, and even autism spectrum disorders. Neurofeedback involves no invasive procedures or surgeries, and does not involve the use of any drugs or pharmaceuticals. So how does neurofeedback work?

1. First, a clinician will apply electrodes to your brain to measure brainwave activity using an electroencephalogram (EEG) machine. The electrodes do not hurt but you will need to set aside some time for the process.

2. Second, the EEG allows you and the clinician to observe your brain waves on a monitor. By watching the brain waves visually, you can see how directly your thoughts and feelings impact your brain.

3. Third, you effectively rewire your own brain! Sounds like science fiction, but neurofeedback is an evidence-based practice allowing you to take greater control of your brain, mind, and body. By directing your thoughts and mastering your emotions, you will see tangible results not just in the subjective sense of wellbeing but also in measurable, quantifiable outcomes you can see for yourself on the screen.

4. Fourth, you maintain the desired brainwave state. Depending on the presenting condition, your health history and background, and your lifestyle, you might need to return for additional neurofeedback. Self-mastery does not happen overnight, but with time and practice, you will be able to regulate your own brain without the aid of the EEG.
